Mankind has progressed a lot in all the fields, especially in
the field of computers and smart devices. Newer devices and improved ones are being
launched almost every month. Android, iOS and windows to name a few operating
systems on which these devices work on.

When we go to any online shop or in the
market to buy a PC or a smartphone, we always tend to look at its RAM,
processor and other specifications. The question is – how much is sufficient
for us? OR does it solely depend on our budget- the one with the highest
specifications in the budget is bought. OK, even if you buy such device, how
much of the resources you actually use?
This article will make you think again about your choices-
The history
Lets go back to 1969- the year man set his foot on the moon,
led by the American agency NASA. You could try to imagine the extent of the difficulties
they might have overcome in the absence of the new technology and devices, for
sending the man to the moon. However, the computers and software written at
that time used for this mission were sufficient to guide the man across 356,000
km of space from the Earth to the Moon and return them safely. In fact, these
formed the base of the modern day computing.
The Apollo Guidance Computer (AGC)
AGC was the essential command module computer used in that
lunar mission. The OS it used allowed the astronauts to type the command in
noun and verb, which in turn controlled the spaceship.
The memory AGC had was 64Kbytes.
Its OS operated at 0.043 MHz. Its weight was 32 kg approx.
Moreover, back on Earth, at the Goddard Space
Flight Center thousands of flight technicians and computer
experts employed the IBM
System/360 Model 75s mainframe computer to make independent computations
and maintain communication between Earth and lunar landers. These computers cost $3.5 million apiece and were the
size of a car. Each could perform several hundred thousand addition
operations per second, and their total memory capacity was in the megabyte
range.
So?
Just imagine what your smartphone is worth of,
when man can go on moon using such pitiable devices! That was a joke. It would
be unfair to compare these two as the purpose and reason of construction is
completely different. A simple toaster, a USB stick or a wifi router is more
powerful than these devices, leave your smartphone!
Still the idea is to use the your device to the max and not
falling to gimmicks of the companies trying to sell us extra and unwanted RAM, processors or other features :)
